Society today under values mothers and over values jobs that actually pay money. Today I read an article that calculated how much it would cost if all of the jobs completed by a stay at home mom were contracted out at fair market wages. It would cost $116,805 (US) annually to pay someone for the work that I do. This includes child care, cooking, cleaning, and the millions of other things that stay at home moms do for their families.
Sometimes I'm embarased to say that I am a stay at home mom. I tell people that I was a teacher or I'm planning on returning to work someday. But ook at all of that money we are saving, or the money I could be making if I contracted myself out. I would be making 3 times as much as I did as a teacher.
I'm giving my son the opportunity to explore his world outside of the classroom before he is forced to answer to the ring of the school bell. I'm giving him a chance to bond with us, to know that we love him, provide for him, and will kiss him better when he bumps his head. I'm giving him a chance to build up his self esteem and self worth by hearing praise and encouragement. I'm helping to form his worldview so that when he gets out into the world on his own he'll be able to stear the paths of life with a strong foundation built on a rock. No money or job in the world could replace these things.

You should never feel embarrassed about being a stay at home mom. :) Family means a lot to me. My mom always took care of us when we were little. It's a very respectable position. If anyone thinks otherwise it's probably because they have some deep-seated mental issues.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how my mom managed it.
I'm not sure how most good moms handle it.
I mean the other kids were terrible! >.>... eh he he.... :)
Ok, so maybe I wasn't that great all the time either. :)
You're totally right about all that stuff though.
Thanks Rae! It's always encouraging to be reminded what an importand job we have!
